What steel will you make SRK from - Thursday, January 07, 2010 1:00 AM ( #1 )
In last year I hear so much complain about the AUS8A made SRK. Acturelly the AUS8A steel is pretty good steel, but it is not so tough as Carbon V, so it is widely complained in my town.  People can usually endure some rust on the blade ,but can hardly embrace the blade becoming soft. The beloved Carbon V has gone, can you find a proper steel to take the place? 1095 Cro-Van,I think it would be a good choice.

Welcome to the forums.   and you are in luck.  Word is that the SRK will be produced in  San Mai III.  Along with several other upgrades.

Welcome Spruce. I don't habve a SRK yet but I have no complaints from my Recon Tanto in AUS8A. I'd love for it to be Carbon V but it has performed great for me as is. I can't wait to pick up a Recon Tanto and SRk in San Mai II though as long as the price is right.

I don't think aus8a is at a disadvantage compared to carbon V. I would like to check out a large carbon V knife, I have a small country classic. I think with the sub zero quench stainless steels are more than sufficient for survival. I am also interested in Sk-5.

I guess he wants a measured drawing and doesn't know that you can not

"expect this forum to be method of contact for any customer service related issues."

But

" If (he) would like to contact Cold Steel regarding any customer related issues

He could

"please click here."

I doubt that they will send any drawings but their was once a measured drawing of a CS Tanto posted in these forums that someone pulled off a Patent filed by CS.  So maybe it could be found elsewhere?

I like the idea of an SRK made in Sanmai and I would like also in 1095 to keep the cost down. There are a plenty of  stainless steel with good quality and low cost like 440C.What about of an SRK in D2?

Also S7 and L6 are good carbon steel for SRKs but today top of the notch is M4. The old beloved Carbon V was very similar to 52-100!

I'd improve the tang (I harp, I know) and make it from diferentially tempered 5160.

Sorry, does not compute.   Why does someone want a mere two dimensional drawing when they have the actual three dimensional model they wish to copy ?   Perhaps to see the internal parts of handle---but just shape that to fit your own hand making the tang as substantial as possible.  Sending out blueprints would amount to an invitation to do knockoffs.   The legal eagles among us might comment but I would say that would amount to Cold Steel giving permission to someone to make copies.

^ yeah I am sure the technical drawings are copy righted at least, so I really doubt that they would just give it away to anyone who asks. Kind of like here we made this but here are all the specs and technical drawings go ahead and copy it we don't mind.

I'd get rid of the hollow grind, convex it, and continue the tang through the butt of the handle.
All in San Mai III, and put it into a Spec-Ops sheath.
Then it'd be the perfect mid sized survival knife.
If the thought of doing something makes me giggle for more than 20 seconds, I should assume I'm not allowed to do it.

I have the SRK in AUS8 and Carbon V and either is better than 1095 Cro-Van or 52100; although Carbon V and 1095 Cro-Van are nearly the same.

I have six carbon v srk blanks and three built knives, no not for sale.

I'll take a SRK in 1055 if given a choice ; )

CPM M4

Hey you didn't say it'll have to have a reasonable cost!

I'd like to see the SRK and other knives made in San Mai III with CPM S30V as the core instead of VG-1. S30V has provided the sharpest blade I've seen so far.

I have several Carbon V SRK's, but I bought one AUS8A SRK last year - to use in the water. I must say that the AUS8A actually impresses me quite a bit; it's edge is just as sharp as Carbon V as far as I'm concerned, and the tip comes to finer point than any of my Carbon V knives.

Something I'd really like to see is for the old-style kydex sheaths to make a comeback. I like having the ability to insert the SRK into the sheath facing either direction without having to go to the trouble of switching the belt loop to the reverse side. This is especially important for my method of horizontal carry. I'll create a new thread about this in a moment...
