here is a small price item that might be worth its weight in gold.  Battery operated motion detector.  Good for whether you intend to retreat to a cabin--stay holed up at home--or even travel--because you need to sleep sometime--prop it on a nearby rock..   OK so it goes off now and then from a raccoon--so it either keeps raccoons out of the garden or provides you with a raccoon dinner.  Raccoon is good eating.
These are just to illustrate the concept and price--first thing I found on my search engine.

I haven't seen those lights here , mind you I havent really looked either, but those alarms work a treat. I have one myself to let me know when people come onto my front verandah, I just prop it in the window looking outwards. I also got one for my parents when they had a large 2 storey home so they would know if anyone approached the front door.

I have also seen similar lights as those which are solar powered , even a better proposal in our scenario.  They basically could be set up anywhere to take away any unwanted suprises
by lighting up the area , taking away the element of suprise and lighting up a target area.

sometimes things just are not what they seem.

Unfortunate side effect of that could be that you're advertising your presence to nasties when animals (or trees in the wind) set it off (wot's that light up there? I dunno, let's find out).

With a bit of lateral thinking and wiring, however, IMHO it could be rather good, remove the light and replace it with the sender for an AV baby monitor (you can get battery ones, even low light ones as I remember). That way when the sensor triggers, it sends sound and video to the receiver (with you inside), which could be set to squawk when it goes off (to wake you up), and you can see, or at least hear, what's going outside and get ready for it.

Oh, and as Fox noted in the other thread, you should make sure that you've got a back door that you can get out of without being seen, to either address the issue or get the hell out of there if the odds are against you.

PS: MacGuyver was a 'tard, I'd show him what to do with his pen and sticky tape! ;^)

Good ideas about the lights.  I've set up trip wires with a small device that when triggered hits a glow stick.  I bought the device from a military catalauge (I think UScavalry).  The set up and idea was easy but I never had anything trigger it and never really needed it so stopped using them.  After several moves I don't know if I still have them but my try to look again.

Way off topic,

Richard Dean Anderson, the actor who played MacGuyver,is highly defficent in mechanical aptitude. I think my 8 and 10 year old cousins could show him a thing or two.
To many hobbies, not enough time.
