So how did this happen? I always thought it was kinda cool but never really wanted it. Yesterday, I decided that I did. I know I just got a new knife last week, but this "Cold Steel Obsessed" thing is really starting to get out of hand. Anyway, I gotta have the damn thing and I know that it's pretty popular with a lot of you guys, so post me some pics, give me some good stories or whatever, and make me dig out my credit card again.

I keep trying to want a Spartan, but after handling 3 of them at the lcoal knife store, I just can't do it. The pocket clip is too high, the knife sits way too deep in the pocket and the pocket snag absolutely sucks. It may or may not loosen up after a lot of use, but it should be perfect right out of the box. Just my 2 cents worth. Billy, if you haven't handled one, I suggest you do so before getting that credit card out. I'm not REAL picky, but the clip and the snag are big detractors for me. Gee whiz! Now I'm starting to sound like SirrJames!

My step son really likes the looks of the Spartan. I might get him one. I do take SirJames criticism into account though.

In all fairness to the Spartan it does feel awesome in your hand, and is very impressive in its size and weight.I have said it before but I actually think mine must have been defective,I dont want to sound like im bashing the thing as its the only one ive ever handled and I simply can not believe they would make a knife that impossible to get used to as if it was your 1st experience with CS it would be your last, and bbbb, you cant sound like me till ya b*tch about its bead blast finish

I do agree though that if you have a place to handle one before you buy it,do so,its not for everyone and even if it didn't have as much difficulty breaking in as mine did it still just jumps into your hand from the snag(When it does work) in an awkward position more likley to drop and impale your foot than jumping into your hand in a secure grip and it takes quite a bit of practice, although im guessing a good lanyard may help solve this problem, again this is assuming you get one that opens easier than mine does,if your not bothered by the finish and are willing to invest the time in the practicing with it,it will serve you well,im just not finding it trustworthy for EDC,its looks 100% SD but in my mind its more suited for work,ya dont have to worry about messing up its finish and its rugged as hell

I really don't want to make the whole Spartan snag discussion all over again, so I suggest billybrown to look up the previous Spartan threads. I've solved all the problems with Spartan snag and handling. Takes some practice, but this practice time is well invested IMO.

Thank you all for weighing in and giving me some good pros and cons to think about. It does suck that I don't have a place to go and check one out in person. The only place around here that even carries Cold Steel is Bass Pro and they're selection is pretty-slim. Still, considering the price and what you're getting for said price, I really can't turn it down. I'm going to go ahead and pick it up and see what happens. I'll keep ya'll posted.

I like my Spartan; however, I find the grip is more suited to someone with larger hands than mine. The AK-47 is more suited to my hands. If you have big meaty paws it will probably feel good in your hand. If you have smaller hands consider the AK.

If you find the Spartan too big, too heavy, or too costly, handle a XL Espada. After that, everything else will feel a lot more compact, light weight, and economical. Just don't go crazy for the XL Espada. Unless you need to carry a pocket sword that makes Spartan look tame.

My girlfriend got me the Spartan for valentines day. When I first saw it, i wasnt interested in it. When I got it and had it in my hands, woah this knife is amazing. It has all the feel of a real hand to hand combat knife. You can use some very advanced techniques with it. The blade lockup is incredibly tight with 0 Wiggle.

Personaly I love it. But I think it rides to low in the pocket to get out fast even with the layard I put on. I also have a problem with it like no other problem I've had with any other knife I've own. I get rust spots(blemishes) on the blade from just being in my pocket. Outside of these 2 things its a great buy...

The other day I went to the grocery store late at night (my wife was out of town and I had the munchies) wearing sweat clothes, and just stuffed it into my jacket pocket with my wallet. When I pulled my wallet at the very crowded checkout, I bounced the Spartan off the conveyor in front of the cashier. No one even flinched; nobody fainted; no children were traumatized (as far as we know so far).... Of course this is Texas. <grin>

It's always nice when people don't freak out when they see a knife or gun. Couple weeks ago, I needed to cut some tape right at the front door of my work building. Having a winter jacket on, the most available knife was my Rajah II, so I pulled it out and did the cutting. The doorkeeper just looked at it and said "That's a pretty cool pocket machete you've got there!"

^^^Knecht, I never miss an oportunity to get someone interested in CS when they show favorable interest, like your door keeper did. If there is a minute to spare, I'll hand it to them so they can feel what a top quality knife is really like.

I hate the spartan. is very heavy and the spring is too stiff and is not very sharp due the bad angle. At opposite I love the Black Rhino which I consider one the better knife on market today. The only thing I can't explain is why is in AUS8A and not in VG1 but is not important.

I know that two or three weeks ago, I said that my mind was made up and I was going to get a Spartan. I still haven't done it. What I did do was order the Rajah II today. The Spartan will now come next. By the way, I'll have to get some pictures up here soon. I've been saying I was going to do it since I got my X2.

It's a great knife! Got mine a few weeks ago, along with a Rajah II. It takes a while to get used to drawing it, the clip is very tight. I can legally carry it in NJ, where the Rajah II is not legal, so I'm happy.
