Good throwing knives - Thursday, February 04, 2010 11:55 AM ( #1 )
I was looking to get some throwing knives that are durable enough to practice without dulling the blade in 30 minutes. I have stainless steel blades right now and they are the biggest waste of money on the market. Also was hoping they would also be cheap enough that if i had to throw them in self defense i would not cry if it could not get them back. Any ideas? Also instructional videos on throwing knives that include techniques that do not involve a rotating blade in flight. If anyone could help me out in my search i would be greatful

Welcome to the forums.
For general purpose I believe this is unbeatable.

While for hunting/survival/ field use I believe the best ever made is the Perfect Balance found on this page with a couple others that would be great target knives.

I do not have any but the true flight and the Perfect balance (and the torpedo, but that is another animal entirely)   I have thrown them 1000s of times and never done anything but dull the tip and they are easily restored to new condition.  I like the perfect balance so much that when it was discontinued I found an extra on the internet just to stash away for whenever I lost mine.   Now Cold Steel is bringing it back.  The design dates back to the 50s and has seen a lot of serious users.

We have quite a bit on throwing knives here.  Including instructional videos and diagrams.  Just enter "throwing" in the search engine under "search forum" at the top of the page and you will find a bunch, but feel free to ask too.

You can also try to find some Mini Flight Throwers. They were cheap, but a great value.

For the kind of self defense throwing you probably have in mind you might also like to look into some of the CS Spike models.

Proponents of spin-less throwing are Ralph Thorn and Hozan Suzuki. Also interesting is the site of Jason Wotherspoon.

be careful.  I would highly recommend against a throwing knife as a SD weapon.  I've done a good deal of throwing at wooden, cardboard and balistics gel targets.  The amount of penetration you get is not great unless you are using an extreme throw with all your power and from a close distance.  In a high stress situation the likely hood of hitting your target with a debilitating blow is small.  The last thing I want to do is give an angry opponent another weapon.  IMHO throwing knives are not a good SD option.

As for good knives the ones already mentioned are very good.  I like the true flight thrower myself.  I also like the 80pss but find this more of a poormans' fighting blade with throwing options.  The spike series would leave a nice large opening in a target but I would be sad if I lost mine.

If you are planning on throwing with a knife in a self defense situation. I would suggest that you learn to throw with every knife you've got.
And i do mean every knife, from fixed blades to even kudu's.
I've trained myself in throwing with every kind of knife, from a SRK, a kukri machete, a spike and even with a Ti Lite and a kudu.
You never know which knife you've got on you when you need to throw it.

And as Fox stated, throwing your weapon is the last thing you want to do.
Doesn't mean that practice isn't fun.

I would only throw my knife to transition to a better knife or gun.

Throwing knives are supplementary weapons. They distract, wound, or immobilize the attacker. Also, throwing stuff at the attacker can help to create openings or force the attacker into a spot where you want him - preferably between a rock and a hard place.

Furthermore, throwing can enable you to flee the situation by either opening a path (multiple attackers) or buying some time to get a headstart on the assailant, i.e. you throw the knife/knives and the BG takes cover.

Like the others said, if the throwing knife is your last weapon don't throw it.

As mentioned in the 'things we learn from the movies ' thread--the perception is that as soon as someone gets a knife stuck in him he falls to the ground dead.  Not so.  He Literally may not notice.  I knew a cop who described being stabbed multiple times in the back deep enough it barely missed his heart (due to that being slightly out of place from normal).   He only turned around to tell the guy to stop slapping him on the back.  Was surprised he had been stabbed.
I agree with the others.  I would never throw a knife with the expectation of that ending things.   Only for the reasons mentioned by others.  For that--sure--throw anything--a drink in the face won't kill either--but it will get you inside the guys reaction curve and that means a great deal.

In a wilderness survival situation I consider a knife far to valuable to throw.  You risk breaking it, loosing it in the brush, or sticking it in some animal that then runs off with it.    Better you should use the knife to make a spear or throwing stick.

Having said all that, it is a wonderfully fun way to relax and in a non-life or death situation you can take rabbits and such.
