Spectre - Strange knife - Saturday, July 08, 2017 12:19 PM ( #1 )

I recently purchased a Custom Series Spectre from a fellow forum member, and received it yesterday.  The seller indicated that it was dull, and from the pics he sent I could see that the blade was way off center when closed, so I knew it wasn't perfect going in.  Dullness from the factory seems to be a common complaint on these, and I figured I could fix or at least improve the blade centering.

I received the knife, and looking it over, it looked "bent", which would explain the blade being off center.  Sure enough, I put a straight edge on both sides and there is a definite curve to the knife (see pics).  The other issue this caused were visible gaps between the frame and handle scales, as well as being able to feel the edge of the scales where it transitioned from the bolster.

So I took it all apart, thinking that I would be able to straighten it out and put it back together.  The catalog claims that it has titanium liners (plural), but this is not the case.  The non lock side only has a mild steel liner, which bends easily.  The lock side liner has both steel and titanium layers.  So I put it all back together, and it seemed to be straighter, but as I tightened everything down, it basically bent again.  It's like all the tolerances stacked up one way on one side, and the other way on the other side, causing a mismatch between the two halves.  So I loosened everything up again and stuck a plastic pen cap pocket clip between the liner and blade to force it over to the other side and tightened it all back up.  The blade centering is not perfect, but better than before.

The other thing, which the seller did not disclose (2 out of 3 ain't bad lol), is that there are what appear to be sharpening scratches on one side of the blade.  But it looks like they were already there when the blade was polished, as they themselves look polished if you know what I mean.  I am pretty sure I read about this issue somewhere before, but can't find anything online.

So, this knife has been interesting to say the least.

Some more pics.  First one shows the gap between the frame and scale, second shows the sharpening marks, and 3rd shows the blade centering after rebuilding it.

I have had a couple pass threw my hands going to other members and I think you may have a lemon send it in to CS.
I have no idea about the side liner because I never took one apart but the 3 that have been threw here even one used one where all fine. Of course that could have been pure luck the few good out of all the bad. But heck just call them and send it in.
The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

I did not notice any of these flaws from the pictures( I actually made him an offer but you had beat me to it.). No titanium, how can that be? I have not heard of any knock off's. I wonder if Cold Steel could shed any light on it. Handle Material: Titanium frame w/ Micarta Scale Overlays Bolsters: Titanium~

Can't imagine it being a knock-off, since it has the lamination line.  Looking at it more closely, maybe the single liner on the non lock side is titanium, but it seemed to bend easily.  As you can see in the first pic in my second post, the frame on the lock side is twice as thick, since it has 2 layers...the inner layer is the liner lock, and I thought the outer layer was a single piece of titanium that included the bolster, since I didn't see a seam.  On the non lock side, there is a seam between the bolster and liner, so they are definitely 2 separate pieces...this made me think that the non lock side liner wasn't titanium.  Now that I look closer at the lock side, I can also see a very faint seam between the bolster and first liner layer. So chances are both sides do have titanium, but it still surprises me how much you can flex this knife...holding it at both ends (closed), I can easily flex it back and forth enough for the blade to touch each side.  My Grik and Tuff Lite are more rigid (granted they are shorter, but still).

At this point I'm not sure what sending it to CS would do, since it is long discontinued...not like they can replace it, and probably don't have any parts to try anything else.  I will probably just resell it at some point and see what happens.

So true on sending it in, I was not thinking when I said that.  I do recall I found them very light but I never did try and flex one. Since I have things coming threw here all the time if one should come threw I'll let you know.

That is a lot of flex, I can see how the knife would lose center. I don't think I have run across a folder that would flex like that, weird! It is long and thin but so is a TiLite without the flex. These knives go for a lot of cash on EBay. Polishing out the scratches along with a good sharpening would help the aesthetics, at least the blade is already polished to start.
