Tent canvas - Wednesday, January 18, 2017 11:00 PM ( #1 )
Just wondering if anyone has a good source for heavy duty canvas for a long term shelter? I've been using some fairly 10oz for making ditty bags and packs, but I doubt it's suitable for use in making a tent.
Feel free to correct me on anything that I have said.

Well there are alot of options. Most job site style canvas tarps can be big enough to fix up into a simple teepee or a frame tent. Another option would be buying used military shelter halves since they run about $25-30 for two halves you can spend about $100-$150 and get a massive one put together.
As for prebuilt tents numerous sites sell GI surplus shelters with stove jacks and occasionally the winter liner. If all goes well at tax return day I'm planning on buying a premade tent from a company called stout bell, who were kind enough to send me swatches of their materials to test as I see fit.

Canvas Painter tarps work well, Around here you can find them pretty cheep. Last ones I got where where 20x30 and I found them at a local hardware store for $35.00 EA. Tuck and Roll shops are normal down here and they sewed them into a tent for me for another $40. I then covered the seams with tent sealer to stop any leaks. It was a lot cheaper then buying one of the lodge tents.
The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

I'll have to look into the drop cloth thing. Going to need a shelter for the summer

For the summer? Have you considered a canvas painter tarp over top of a pallet house? Pallets are cheap, if not free, and you can make damn near anything out of them. If you have a decent trailer some people even make tiny houses out of them.

I'm thinking a low slung butt and pass log structure with canvas over the roof and two side walls.
