US Navy Officer's sword - Sunday, September 25, 2016 8:46 AM ( #1 )
I am interested in getting the US Navy Officer's sword since my ceremonial version cannot be sharpened.
From what I have read some people are noting that the handles that are dark have the actual ray skin but the ivory version does not.  Is that correct? How well are these swords made?

Thank you.

Well, I ordered the sword anyways. It is coming tomorrow.  I wanted something that would be able to be sharpened. My ceremonial dress sword is nice but I wanted a weapon, just in case.

Let us know how you like it.
The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

Yes please let us know.   My Army Officer's saber (GI Issue) still sits hidden away in my closet.  No way I'm putting an edge on that one.   But if you have good luck with the CS Navy version, I might be adding something new to the Christmas list for 2016!

I compared the two. Although the markings on the actual sword are a bit different, it is not something that I would scrutinize.  The brass is less bright but I actually prefer it since it looks more like an antique.  Compared to my original Sword, it is a little bit longer.  The feel and weight are excellent.  The scabbard is well made.  The fact that it can be sharpened is the biggest plus for me.

Although my wardroom buddies gave me my ceremonial sword and it has a sentimental value, I prefer my Cold Steel sword since it serves with a practical nature.  I found mine on Amazon, like new for $25 less than their going rate.

I was given my navy sword by my wardroom when I was promoted to commander in the US Navy.  I never had a chance to wear it ceremoniously but it was an honor to receive one.  I saw that Cold Steel made their own rendition of the US Naval Officer Sword/Sabre.  The advantage is that it can be sharpened.  The brass has a nice antique look and it has a lot of character when compared with the bright reddish brass of my Vanguard from Spain.  The markings on the sword are different, the size of the guard and the size of the fittings on the scabbard are, too.

It would still be acceptable for regulations.  I prefer the Cold Steel because of its antique finish though the engravings are not identical or similar.

I wouldn't use this for a military wedding though.  Cutting the bride and groom would be unacceptable.

I figured this would help some of my fellow naval officers who were looking at the Cold Steel swords.

The workmanship is excellent, and it is a solid full tang Sabre.  I love it and I don't regret acquiring it.

Something for my fellow officers to consider.  I never saw anyone post theirs.

Yep, I like the Cold Steel version better. It looks like a usable weapon, rather than simply a ceremonial item. Just lost another job so I won't be buying any more CS for a while, but if/when I can start up again, I may have to examine the Army Officer's Sabre. Thanks for posting the pictures, especially the side-by-side comparisons!
