Cold Steel Gurka Kukri - Light Terrain Chopper - Heavy Terrain Chopper - Sunday, March 14, 2010 9:55 AM
I own the GK and a LTC but I never saw (or even heared about) the HTC before I red a post in this forum.

I wonder was it was made for (ok, for chopping) and why it had been discontinued.

For me, my Carbon V LTC (is it really Light Terrain Chopper or Lynn Thompsons Cukri?) is much superior over the Gurka Kukri.

The HTC was even bigger more a short sword.

Does anyone have a picture with the actual size so one can make a replika ??

OK, I am trying to upload 3 pics with a contrary computer.  One shows the HTC and my Norse Hawk and my Gurka Kukri.  In another we have the HTC laying on top of the Norse to illustrate how the handle and the cutting edges align perfectly.   In the other we have the Gurka laying atop the HTC to illustrate how the cutting edges all align , with the HTC just going beyond where the Ghurka ends.

Thank you very much dlyn!!!

Is it possible that the HTC is very close in size and shape with the kukri machete??

Halfway between the two kukri machetes in length and a bit thicker I think.

It finally soaked through to me that I have access thanks to Big Joe, of the specs he sent me back then.  Here is the quote from the catalog at the time these were made.

“Lynn Thompson has always tested the limits of everything he does. So it was natural he would take the Kukri to its upper limit in length. After much research and field testing he found that 15 inches was as long as he could go without the knife becoming unwieldy. But at this length the HTC kukri is absolutely awesome. The broad belly of the LTC kukri has become a slimmer, sinuous curve to reduce weight, and the resulting shape has an almost sword-like appearance. this knife looks as deadly as any we have ever made. And in this case, looks do not deceive since the HTC kukri generates sword-like power. Both the penetration and cutting potential are tremendous. In fact the 'sweet spot' where maximum blade cutting power is generated is almost 12 inches long !”

Blade length 15 inches
Overall length 20 inches
Thickness 1/8 inch
Weight 21 oz
“U.S. Premium High Carbon Steel” (blade is stamped Carbon V)

I recently sold one of the best choppers ever made by Cold Steel.  It was the ATC (All Terrain Chopper), 12" blade, 1/4" thick Carbon V.

I recently purchased a Kukri from Nepal, $100 shipped.  10MM thick and a 15" heavy blade.  Spring carbon steel.  Quite the chopper!

Just yesterday I received my barely used LTC.  I am very impressed!  Even though it's not that thick, it slices through 2" + live tree limbs like buttah.  Pix to follow.

Thor--the length of the HTC and magnum kukri are similar, but the HTC has a wider blade that is somewhat thicker (also Carbon V vs 1055)

I have owned the ATC, LTC, Gurkha and and Gurkha light kukris. I have several HI Khuks, and a Busse Kukri, but my favorite for carrying is my well-worn Cold Steel MTC. It's just right, to me.

Nice blade. I really LOVE your "tuning" .... or is the back blade an original thing? I never saw such a blade before.

Pretty certain it's original.

My LTC is my new fave brush clearing tool.
I recently received an 8" blade khukuri from nepal that I also very much like.

Vic Ross at first I have to say I didn't like the mini kukri, but upon looking at it more its growing on me,its the clip point, never a winning "point" for mebut I think that the mini kukri would be a hell bent for leather fighting kukri, better at thrusting and not giving much up to its chopping/slashing ability.I think I would still grab my LTC kukri for general bush work though.
Jason can you post pics of your 8" kukri ,very interested to see what that little beuty looks like.

Sure.  It's about 10mm thick, and has a nice heft to it.  I already chopped through some 2.5" Oak branches, and it chopped well.

The new 8" is my official camping knife, but the LTC will always go with it.

Jason thanks mate for the pics,I love your 8" kukri, very nice. The build quality of the Napalesse kukri's seam to be a lot better than the Indian made ones,I admit (as you already know) that my ideas of the original kukris was soured some what with my experiences with the Indian versions. You cant go past the brutal cutting ability of the LTC kukri,my favorite chopper.

I agree, pound for pound the LTC is my new fave all-rounder.  I think after using the 1055 machetes etc and seeing how quickly they dull compared to the Carbon V (which stays sharp all day), it's a no-brainer.

The little 8" Nepal is easy to carry in my Maxpedition Gearslinger.  A few more fotos I just took with my cell comparing it visually to the LTC.
