best Machete for fighting zombies - Sunday, November 08, 2009 4:14 PM ( #1 )
Ever since I read the Zombie Survival Guide I have been thinking what the best Cold Steel Machete for killing Zombies in the coming Zombie Apocalips would be and I have decided the LATIN MACHETE 24" and MAGNUM KUKRI MACHETE would be best for there reach and cuting ability. But I am open for sugestions. And yes I know Zombies are not real yet.

those both sound good.  i would also add the hard-to-find Kopis machete to the mix.

Id like to track down one of CS's old battle maces as well if we are talking just machetes I think you got it right the 1st time 24 inch latin has the most reach but the magnum kukri has the best overall head severing properties I would think

Of the machete's I own I'd pick my panga that has most of the top sharpened as well. I think that would do some damage with a back cut.

Anybody remember the image that was posted of LTC holding a Two Handed Kukri Machete?  Assuming it becomes available next year, that's my zombie-hacking blade of choice, for sure!

Machetes are not good for close quarters zombie killing.
They dull and can get stuck. How many zombies are you gonna decapitate before it goes dull? Sure it can be useful, but it should be a last resort. Try to destroy the brain via blunt force trauma. A blunt object has a hard time getting duller.

Whatever would be used, I would want one in each hand.

Something two-handed is more powerful, but nearly always slower.

So...I would go with 2 of the Magnum Kukris, or perhaps their smaller sibling.

My second choice would be 2 of something blunt, as Callsign suggested.  Maybe a pair of either Brooklyn bats.

Because a katana is soo much slower than a wakizashi or tanto?

Two handed is our friend, because the farther you are from the zombies, the less likely you are to BECOME a zombie.  Distance is key in a zombie fight.  Given the option, I'd prefer the Boar Spear or the Grosse Messer, but they weren't options in a *Machete* thread.

On z day for my sword I would use the hand and a half sword. For blunt force I would not use the warhammer. Why? Cause it will most likely get stuck in the zombie when you hit its head. Which is why my buddy and I are modding the cold steel crusher into a tetsubo. This way the impact is concentrated with the tiny bolts and since the bolts we will be using are round they wont be like spikes and get stuck in the zombies head. I would not use a machete but I would use a san mai gurkha kukri. I believe thanks to hollywood and people from snl who think they can write a zombie book you can take for fact we are under the impression that a 15 dollar machete is the ultimate zombie killing weapon.

You have to remember the human skull is one of the hardest parts of the body.  if you miss the first swing or you don't destroy the bran the zombie will be all over you. not to mention most bludgeons take A lot of strength and are slow but A good machete wont dull easily and will take A head off easily. If there are more than one zombie there are few melee weapons better than A machete.

For zombies, I would go for the Bolo machete. It has a lot of blade to it, and enough bulk at the head to give it some nice heft when coming down on a skull. I'm surprised that nobody has thrown a hawk into the mix. A Rifleman's Hawk would makes its way into the brain nicely, and still have the hammer side for some good ol' fashioned bashing. Probably a little more versatile than the War Hammer as well. I'd throw some langetes(sp) onto it for strength though.

Kopis just because it looks so cool. A Bolo and a Mace.  Slice um, Dice um, and Bash um.
The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

I think you have been watching way too many movies, it will take just as much strength if not more to decapitate anything. Don't you think a machete will get dull quickly if you have to cut through hard material like oh say bones that you are going to hit in the spinal column also a well protected part of the body? Besides the fact the head is a bigger target to hit than a neck, I'm no expert but a bigger target is easier to hit than a small one. But hey it's all fun and games and there really is no right or wrong anyway right?

I hate to say it but if I come across a Zombie. The first thing that is going to cross my mind is not. What machete should I use?  I think the first thing would be. OH S*#T quickly followed by.
OK What the heck did I miss? I really need to watch the news more.

I would go with a magnum kukri machete and a riflemans hawk in my other hand as i can slash and chop with the machete and chop and smash with the hawk.

My votes for the Indian War Club and my 1860 Heavy Cavalry saber.

The Indian War Club will smash a head and not get stuck.  Or rust.  Or break.  But it would smash pretty well all day long.
I love my saber, period.  The knuckle guard is an excellent impact tool, and with only a little effort, limbs and heads could be severed.  Plus, it has reach as far as melee weapons go.  I would NOT thrust with it though under those circumstances.  You can cut a 12' circle around yourself with a saber.

To be honest, if I had to use just melee weapons, then I would use both of those together.

To choose only one, then practically speaking, it would have to be the Indian War Club.

All of those would work well also, provided you've got the room to use them, but that can't always be counted on (yeah, like I've got firsthand knowledge of fighting zombies, LOL).  Besides, like you said, the post is about machetes used against zombies.  It's all something just to have fun with anyway.

I love the 1860 Heavy Cavalry saber and consider it the ultimate Zombie killing melee weapon but this tread is dedicated to the machete so my rant on why the 1860 Heavy Cavalry saber is the best zombie killing melee weapon will have to wait.

Since its veterans day "end of WW1 day for people outside of the U.S." and this thread is about machetes I thought I should say thanks to all U.S. Vets because if it were not for the vets of WW2 the U.S. would not have the machete at all. And that would put us at A big disadvantage when the Zombies attack.
