NYPD Testing Gun Scanning Technology. - Wednesday, January 18, 2012 11:40 AM ( #1 )
Yet another violation of the 4th in the name of "security." NY is testing a device that will electronically search you, without warrants, as you're walking down the street.

Unbelievable that the citizens of NY would think this is okay "If it keeps us safe." Sheeple.

While I generally don't like Civil Liberties organizations, I commend the NYCLU for taking up the case.

The human animal is a beautiful and terrible creature, capable of limitless compassion and unfathomable cruelty.

I love the statements from the sheeple.  Maybe what we really need is a giant sheep pen, we could set aside a section of the country where they could gather, fenced in, and convince themselves that the rest of the world doesn't exist.

Easy way to stop this is get everyone you know to walk down the streets where they are testing it with a chunk of metal in their pockets.
The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

If the NYPD would use these scanners to find excuses to physically search people on the streets, I don't see how that could not be considered an unwarranted search and seizure. Not that it isn't already unconstitutional to search somebody electronically - especially without their knowledge and consent, but if they just start physically searching people because of a suspicion that something could be blocking their body's "energy radiation" - that's really blatant tyranny. I agree with spareparts; cordon off an area of the country specifically for the sheeple to find "safety" within and leave the rest of us alone. I vote for Puerto Rico, Guam or the Northern Mariana Islands - since those are apparently considered to be parts of our country.

I can see this easily turning into another incident like the one in canton. Guy gets searched for a handgun illegally but has the right to carry, cop flips out, hello national news.
Whatever happened to " Protection from unlawful search and seizure."?

Heh heh, what about all the foil hats they'll pick up? This definitely sounds like a form of unlawful search to me. This might be a good excuse for it though..."The Department of Defense is also researching the Terahertz technology to detect suicide bombers wearing explosives." Yep, they'll be able to spot those dangerous back braces and girdles before they go off. I wonder if they'll post signs warning you these scanners are in use so they can frisk you if you detour to a non-scanned street.

I remember getting hassled at the airport long before 9-11. I flew home and brought a couple of things back in my carry-on bag: a small tubing cutter and a small camera tripod.

"What's this?!"
"A tubing cutter."
"Why do you have it?! What do you do with it?!"
"Because I didn't want to have to buy another one, and I use it to cut tubing."
"Oh. What is this then?!"
"A camera tripod."
"Well, it looks suspicious. What is this?!"
"A knife I brought with me when I came home."
"Well, you can't bring it with you in a carry-on."
"Why not? I flew in here with it with no problem."
"Er, um, well, it doesn't fold. No fixed blades allowed."
"Fine, I'll go check my bag in."

Luckily I had enough time to go back to the other side of the airport to check my one bag in. The tripod looked like a Buck Rogers raygun when folded up and did have a L shaped profile. The knife was a Newt Livesay Woo knife, all of seven inches long. I probably pissed the screeners off by not acting worried or anything other than bored with them. It was funny considering I flew home with two rifles with no hassle. Now today I wouldn't dream about trying to bring a fingernail file with me, let alone the dangerous tubing cutter.

Why, you could disassemble it and use the sharp clipper edges to go on a muderous rampage, slaughtering the entire crew and passengers. At least, that is their perception.

I love going to the gunshow and picking up confiscated knives cheap. Swiss army knives, small Leathermans, so, if you ever lost one, rest assured someone other than the TSA will get some use out of it. At least they're not destroyed.

I wonder if the average pair of drumsticks can be allowed onto an airplane. The tip can be broken easily and there you have a good stabbing tool to take on the terrorizers with. what about an aluminum can? ...torn and folded it can slice any would be terrorists. Imagination is more dangerous than a piece of steel and more prevalent than a pocket knife.

Yes this sounds shady and unconstitutional but cops use illegal and unethical means everyday. Its normal for cops to lie to someone to coerce or trick them. An illegal search or wire tap might not be admissible in court but it's still done.

Hmmm. A couple of rolls of quarters in a pocket should set off the "gun detectors". Makes mental note for the next time in NYC.
