Just wondering whateveryone thinks is the best machete that cold steel makes for survial purposes. I personally love my panga as it will chop just about anything I put in front of it like logs, rabid coyotes, Skookums etc.

I like the 18" Latin and the original/Non-magnum Kukri machete the best.

For survival purposes, I have to go with the 12 inch Barong. They can chop, nice shape for other, knife like tasks and is also compact enough to pack easy.

All around, I like the 12" Barong the best for its more delicate point. If it were a Jungle scenario, than 18-24" Latin machete for reach benefits.

The boys in south america run with the latin of course and...the bolo. They do everything with their machetes. From clearing trail to cooking. I have my 18in. barong set up for zero-notice survival.

Vnam68 Does that sheath come with the barong? Unlike the latin machete the barong comes with a sheath. I then added my spear bushman sheath ontop of the barong sheath and secured it. Using velcro (note: use "real" velcro) and ranger bands. I'm going to add a leg tie down system sometime this week.

Trogdor just wondering how did you paracord wrap the handle i tried that with my panga but i couldn't get it to stay on. My trick is to make a rubber sleve from bike inner tube. It lets the cord get a strong bite.

Well Trogdor, not sure if this is any help but today I was wrapping another one, this time with leather lacing. To show how I make the stuff stay put though, I took some pix of it as I did it... First one shows the way I secure the top, I double a piece of the wrap back along the top of the handle (anywhere else and I feel it but here it is where the web of my hand goes so I don't as much). Then as I wrap, the wrapping itself secures the top. The pictures also show the way I put the two sided sticky tape on it. It doesn't always stick really good but with wrapping the turns tightly, the combination of the tape and wrapping tightness holds it all right where I want ti to be. the finished product... sorry but it is still raining so the lighting is lousy. Now all I need to do is finish the sharpening and make a lanyard.

Thanks! I thought about your trick with the inner tube too. I am thinking just the inner tube alone would be helpful.

Nutnfancy sold me on the 12" Bowie machete. Knowing what I know now, I would probably have gone with a 12" Barong. I'm probably going to pick one up at the Winter Parking Lot sale, along with the 18".

I really prefer bowie knives for survival or Kukris but i've been toying with the idea of modifying either the two handed machete or heavy machete for all around survival. I'm thinking of putting a saw blade on the back as well as a bone saw type blade on the curve. Some degree marks on the flat portion for map work. I don't know how well this will work since the blades are so thin but it would make for a useful tool.

Man, I really like the look of the barong machete. It seems like a sweet chopper. I'm going to have to get one soon.

pmhauge Nutnfancy sold me on the 12" Bowie machete. Same here. I didn't need much pushing though... ;) Knowing what I know now, I would probably have gone with a 12" Barong. I'm probably going to pick one up at the Winter Parking Lot sale, along with the 18". That's the thing. They are almost for free anyway!

So far this year I have collected 8 or 9 CS machetes, and I have to say they are the best bargains out there. Any one of them would be great for outdoor use and SD. I wrap my machete handles with self-cling Camo Wrap. Easy on and gives a great grip.

I have all of the machetes, at least one of each one they have made so far... What is it you want to know? if you want to know if I like them, I am a real fan of the sax/wharncliffe style of knife in general so IIWY, I would grab a 12 inch too while you are at it... the picture has a Boar Hunter in it as well as the two Sax machetes...
