Gunstock War Club and predators - Monday, March 19, 2012 4:39 PM ( #1 )
There some videos on YouTube giving us a good idea how effective this is against a human aggressor. For example, on the latest videos by Zombie Go Boom this club actually shears off the entire front of the faux human skull.
So what i am asking for is some calculated speculation by you guys about using it to defend against mountain lions and small to medium sized adult bears.

Bears?......Throw it far enough and pray they go to fetch it, while you pull out your 454.

It might work on some animals, but others it would just piss off more. Animals have a very high pain tolerance.

Against stuffed mountain lions and bears that will sit still for you(like zombiegoboom dummies), it will be very effective.
Against real ones in the wild, I doubt even LT would try that.

I'm guessing it wouldn't be as effective as a big bore hand cannon but I can't help recall stories of frail old ladies fending off mountain lions with sticks and inkpens. Or small cheap pocket knives...a Gunstock War Club would be far more devastating wielded by a strong healthy"young" man than those people.

So you would rather go against a bear with a gunstock war club, over a 454? Cool

Cool, now if you excuse me I have to go hunt flies with a bazooka.

It will be totally effective, if suicide is your goal.   :)

Seriously, against a bear, large cat, wolves, or feral hogs, you need a gun. Maybe a BIG spear or bow/crossbow for hunting all but big bears would be ok I suppose. But I wouldn't do it. Wild animals are a lot stronger, tougher, and faster than you think.

I wouldn't be relying on it. As a wall piece, it is a nice and semi-functional item but to lug the extra weight vs the limited uses... nope.

I've been up against large animals a few times. Black bears, elk, wolves.... (elk are the worst) and the only thing I could see the gunstock as doing is banging against trees or if you had two, waving over your head for the "i'm a giant angry moose" effect. Typically, tree branches have served me well for this purpose. I had one bear that wouldn't yield (i was in my yard bbq'ing) to me with my antlers, my dog freaking out and GF honking in the car so I picked up a 15' 2x4 and slapped the side of the shed a few times while doing the "crazy monkey" call. :D

I love animals....  I've ALWAYS found another way but if I had to fight one, I have a knife I call the Bear Knife but thats for another post....

BTW. In many places you can get fined for not carrying bear spray and to be quite honest, it's probably a lot more effective than my 2' knife in an attack.

@mtntow, I've read that bear spray is statistically the best deterrent against aggressive bears. I'll carry a can of it and would prefer to use it over any other weapon if possible.
