Custom CS Kukri Sheath - Tuesday, July 13, 2010 12:29 PM ( #1 )
I made this a few months back, figured you guys would like it. It is made from 8 oz Belly leather, hand stitched with artificial sinew. I put around 8 hours into it.

This is a pocket I sewn in for a small file. I rounded the tip so I didnt gouge up the leather sliding it into the pocket. At the end I simply put on some shrink tubing.

The belt loop.

Very nice.  Much better than the stock one.  Never a fan of the pivot rings but for this big of a blade it may come in handy.  Good craftsmanship.

I also am into leather work but produce nothing of that standard yet.   This work only took 8 hours?  That is a very fine job.  Do you worry about the back of the press studs scratching the blade at all?

Also did you have any issue with the rivet studs being too long for the thickness of the leather?

The more I look at it the more I like the design.

The rivets are actually punched through the center of the wedge for the sheath, so the blade is only touching the leather wedge inside. I did have some problems with these rivets, they are the rapid rivets from Tandy Leather. I am not all that impressed with them, too "chincy" for me, I would like to try the double cap rivets. I heard they are more solid.

Goose that is outstanding work there. It certainly looks like you have been doing leatherwork for a while. I think a swing rig is fine for such a big blade.

Thats really a nice bit there Goose.  I'm impressed with your skills.  The file pocket is an excellent addition as well.

Now why can't Cold Steel put out a decent and affordable sheath for this and the Magnum like this or Kydex or any thing better than the one they sell with the Machete's.

That's a great looking sheath, Goose. I like the pivot ring, snap-closure belt loop, and the way that the retaining snaps are both on the same piece of leather rather than on two separate straps. I just looked and couldn't find any blackened rivets; your sheath would probably be just as strong with just the stitching and no rivets - if you want to avoid the shiny nickel parts. The ring is shiny anyway, though, so it all goes together well!

Beautiful sheath there. I also like the pocket for the file. The only thing I can think of as a replacement for the rivets would be chicago screws, provided they were well loctited after the final adjustments and tightening. Wouldn't want them working loose out in the field.

Very damn nice.  I do leather work and I -will- be copying your sheath.  Not for sale but just for me.   I think I will add a small pocket sheath on the front for a Pendleton hunter.

Copper rivet and burr sets would work nicely.

To keep the cost down.

CS machettes are so inexpensive that a sheath like that may cost more than the machete itself.

You can check the leather sheaths that comes with the Magnum Tantos for example, and you will see they provide quality ones.
