Blowgun Rabbit Kills - Monday, April 20, 2009 1:55 PM ( #1 )
Here is a recent photo sent to us by a fan.
I cannot remember where, but I do recall someone asking if it was possible to take down a rabbit using our blowguns and here it is.

My Cherokee ancestors hunted game up to rabbits and turkey with blowguns--which I am sure were not near as good as the Big Bore.  They even took big game with them---but that was not something I endorse.  What they did was shoot the eyes.  Then finish the blinded deer with club/tomahawk/ etc...  Sportsmanship and humane behavior goes out the window when your family is hungry.  I think rabbit is as big as you aught to go.

^ i thought that too.  im pretty sure if you dont hit a turkey in the eyes or head with even the broad heads, that bird'll walk away unscathed.  turkeys are the smartest and toughest birds ive ever seen in the wild.  a bow is about the only thing besides a shotgun i'd want to hunt them with.  i will be ordering a big bore in the near future too.  i would agree that humane behavior comes in farther down the list when a starving family is envolved.

I am hardly a turkey hunter.  I shot one once.  They had just opened up the area to turkey hunting and I didn't know beans and it was shotgun only and I am not really a serious shotgunner.  so I took the ammo I had around 7 1/2 I think.  and a particularly stupid bird tried to use me to commit suicide.   I aimed at the body and heard shot rattle off the feathers and he just looked around like "Wa was that ?"  shrugged and walked off.  I stood there with my mouth hanging open too stunned to shoot again.  Not accustomed to things ignoring a 12 ga.   Now I know, you either aim for the head or use really big shot.
so long way to say--yeah I think headshots are the only way you are gonna do turkey with a blowgun.---or pheasants for that matter.

That's some damn good shooting, those nasty rabbits keep moving.
When i've got me some Razor Tip Broad Heads i'll give it a try as well.

I've done it with the Mini Broad head Dart but that doesn't kill instantly.

Turkey are well known for being a tough bird to kill.  They are not stupid at all.
I'm sure you know that is Ben Franklin had his way, ut would have been our national bird and not the eagle.
He thought the carrion eating eagle was not noble enough for the US.  The turkey was a smart, hard to kill bird.
He felt this was a far more fitting symbol for the USA and I am not so sure he wasn't right.

I have a buddy who hunts these regularly and he says the only way to be sure of your kill is to use heavy shot AND shoot for the head.
They have so much meat to get through in the breast area that anything else is not going to make for a sure, quick kill.

Re:Blowgun Rabbit Kills - Monday, April 27, 2009 12:46 PM ( #15 )
People get their impression from domestic turkey --and there is a world of difference.  And they DO fly.  first turkeys I saw in the wild were going overhead.  Startled me some.  But thats what inspired me in my botched attempt at turkey hunting---I saw where they flew to roost.
And of course that was the example used by Sgt York for his "shoot the guy in back first" theory.
I really need to go turkey hunting.  To clear my name and teach them I am not to be ignored.

we had a quite a few wild turkeys living in the woods by my parents house when i was growing up.  we'd see them take flight pretty regularly.  havent seen them as much in recent years, but im not there as often as i once was.  theyre very smart, and will usually run away if things seem out of place.

I agree, i have hunted turkeys and pheasants. Pheasants are like skeet shooting, get your dog to flush them.

But turkeys, oh man... you have to hide from them, as if hiding from people... and then you have to call them out, and sound like a turkey Tera Patrick to get their attention... and THEN you have to shoot them with like a four inch long shell...with a choke going from tighter to tightest... and maybe, JUST maybe... you'll bag one and bring it home...

^or... you could pin em to the ground with a bow and arrow from a tree stand...  thats how my gf's dad and stepmom hunt them.  seem to have really good luck that way too.  too bad turkey season is pretty short here (only like a month), ive wanted to try their method, but dont think i'll get a chance this year.

I shot a frog with a blow gun when i was a kid.  I actually shot it 5 times and it just hopped away.  I think that little guy is looking for revenge.

^ why do you think this?  have you been getting frog-sized letters threatening your life?  be careful if so.  those guys are killer when they want blood.  they will even fall from the sky in large numbers to freak you out, then eat your eyes right outta your skull.  take extreme care, romple.

Cottontails good.  Jackrabbits can be tough.  We used to pick Jacks up by the jaw and shake em---If they felt limp and loose and looked young we ate em--If they look old and scarred and felt stiff---fed em to the dogs and cats.
Best thing ever made for wild game, is the dutch oven.  Cover in your favorite sauce or broth and cook  the toughest meat 4 or 5 hrs and make it good and tender.  Only way I have found to cook deer ribs.
