Big Bore Blowgun - Wednesday, April 08, 2009 7:53 PM ( #1 )
I was just wondering....
Are CS blowguns effective for hunting small game. I have a .40 cal, and they can't take down squirrels for $h!t. Can CS's do better?
Any first hand experience?

Squirrels are tough (depending on species and size) Talking Fox Squirrels.  I found even 22 Rimfires with solids do not stop them unless you get a brain shot.  I needed hollowpoints.  I have no doublt you can kill them with a Big Bore blowgun---but getting clean kills and recovering is another matter.  but I have never done it.  I have with field tip arrows---and those were not good stoppers.  Probably if you are talking about birdfeeder raiders.  I guess I would call squirrels the Cape Buffalo of blowgun hunting.  and I am stricktly talking theory --applied from firearm hunting.---I would love to hear from anyone who has done a few with the blowgun.

I've never seen a fox squirrel stand up to a 22-250, or a 22 magnum. Blows the suckers right off the trees.

This, of course is overkill, even though you have SO much fun. Prairie Dogs spin into the air and I've seen heads and asses fly off in different directions.

But i digress... I bet that the bamboo dart or mini broad head at 15 yards is powerful medicine for the critters.

Or try a hollowed stun dart filled with tannerite and topped with priming compound ( COULD be illegal in some states) just kidding.

Well the little bastards were real close when I took shots, but with a .40 cal they would just get hit, run up a tree and run away.

i would have to agree with SITS.   22-250s and 22 mags really do the best job on squirrels.  the little buggers are quick and hearty.  they run fast and far even if you do manage a hit with anything other than hollow points, at least, in my experience.

ive took a few grey squirrels with it. useing the mini broad heads. squirrels are tough lil critters when i was a kid id hunt them with a pellet gun(that was  all i was alowed to take in the woods by myself) and even shooting them near the upper body wouldnt slow them down

Depending on the squirrel and the type of dart used, you can take them with a .40 cal bu you have to hit them just right for the quick kill.
I have darts that are basically a nail with a broadhead point, I sharpen these up really good, then you still need a good hit or two for a squirrel.

I just ordered my CS Big Bore but again, you need to use the right dart... the ones that are basically wire are not going to do it.
The Razor Tip broadheads would be my first choice, they are sold out of these until July though, or possibly the zytel broadheads.
I am told by Ti lite the zytel ones have better penetration that you would think and with the big head.
They would make a decent wound channel.
Not sure if you can get enough deepness out of the ones that have the ball behind the razor to do a quick kill on a squirrel.
You could definitely use them for a bleed out kill I would think but I don't like cruel kills.

Any sort of explosive projectile is against the law in any state unless you pay the $200 tax.
Altering tannerite to be anything it isn't intended to be, a target or to make ot explode in a different way, would be huge no-no.
I know you are just kidding but it is probably better not to give the people ideas they can't come up with on their own. ;)

I have a target in my 'dojo'  (Upstairs attic room)  a human silhouette for stars and knives and darts--with target zones marked on it.  I had been playing with my old 'small bore' blowgun and decided to compare the Big bore .  This is actually a two piece model from before Lynn acquired the company.  It was amazing how much more accurate the big bore was.  I suspect it is the same as with small bore guns--the small caliber and light weight projectiles just drift too much and any defect sends them off course.  No breeze in my room, so it must have been dart defects.
Now I just have to get a pair of pliers and pull them out because they went through the foam and into the wood backing.

I've hunted a lot with my big bore blowguns.
If you want to know what i use, you can read it here

I think the new broad head razor tips would be the best option, certainly when you hone down the edges.

I luv to eat bunny, one of my favorite foods...

I can hardly wait for my Big Bore to get to me, I think I will need to thin out the bunny pack in the neighborhood here.
I should be able to to this nice an quiet on my back yard too once I get all practiced up with my new blowgun...

BTW, there is a guy on AMAZON who still has a few packs of the Razor Tip darts, mine are inbound as we speak!

PM me for the seller's name if you want to look them up... I really didn't want to wait until July to buy them.

If your talking about this one:

It's through, after a while of use they will have the habit of getting crooked.
And this points makes a large wound hole, but doesn't penetrate deep.

This is the broad head dart we're talking about:

The big bore razo rtip broad head.
This thing will not get crooked, has a large point for a large wound hole, and can penetrate deep because of the metal shaft.

yea i know..i wish i had some of the razor heads.
i was just pointing out the flaws of the big broad head.when i got my blowgun people were going cazy over the big plastic dart because of the big blade but after a week of shooting i had thrown them in a box and forget them.i always found the mini broad heads much better .
untill i get a pack of razors they'll hafta do =/

Re:Big Bore Blowgun - Thursday, April 23, 2009 1:13 PM ( #24 )
With a little trial and error you can make your own broadheads.

I experimented with my .40 cal when I lived in a free state but left it there when I moved to Cali.

You use bamboo darts and make them as you would an arrow.  The best material I found for broadheads was sheet metal (I can't remember what gauge but you can pick it up at homedepot, lowes, ace, etc).  I experimented with metal from steel cans and aluminum soda cans but for some reason they aren't very accurate.  I think you need a little heavier weight on the end of the dart to help stabilize and sheet metal is a thicker gauge.

Anyway.  Make a template (do a google search to look at different arrow heads to decide on your style) so that your tips all come out somewhat uniformely, I like to use plastic from a milk jug.  Trace out the pattern on a piece of sheet metal.  Cut out with tin snips.  Use a pair of needle tip plyers to flaten out the broadhead, after cutting the tin snips will bend it a little.  Hold the tip with needle nose pliers and sharpen the edges on a dremel.

To mount to the shaft make a small split with a razor blade in the middle of the bamboo.  The split only need to go deep enough to seat the tip.  Place tip in split and apply glue around the tip of the bamboo shaft.  Wrap tightly in place with sewing thread.  Put more glue on the thread to keep it from unraveling (I like Gorilla Glue).  Let dry for a day or so.

Might take a few mistakes before you to get the hang of it but it's really pretty simple.

Something else I experimented with to good success is coating the thread with JB Weld.  Once it dries you can use a sanding bit on a dremel to smooth it out, which creates less friction than bare thread upon impact with the target and a little greater penetration.  (Sometimes I have way too much time on my hands)  Heck, you may be able to skip tying on the tip and just JB weld it in place but I never got that far in my experiments.

Sounds like a winner, I will likely do the make my own as well, I bought the extra Bamboo darts for that purpose.
I had not seen this yet but I am glad now that was my choice since you have done it and it worked.

I love Gorilla Glue, that stuff is amazing, use it for anything I need to make sure does not ever move again.  Far better than super glue.

I was actually thinking of making the heads from JB weld at first as I have done stuff like that before, it can be made pretty sharp and is easy to shape before t is set and even easier to carve once it has set.  My thought was to make a kind of socket for the razor then gluing this to the bamboo.  Of course that maybe far too much thinking and way over engineered.  It was something I was simply toying with as I waited for the stuff to get to me.

It may be a lot easier to simply make a template and cut them out of sheet metal though...

Now I want to get one of these too.  My wish list just keeps growing but the bank account doesn't  :(

This would probably be easier to take camping then the bow and would provide small game well.

Re:Big Bore Blowgun - Tuesday, December 01, 2009 5:14 PM ( #28 )
forget about caliber 40 blowguns if you want to hunt , thats not a hunting blowgun
its a toy and works for paper targets , if you want to hunt you will need caliber 50-62
with a 40 caliber blowgun you will only hurt the animals
so dont use it for hunting

im blowgun hunter
